The Bob Dylan songs Timothée Chalamet selected for his musical appearance on “Saturday Night Live” were far from mainstream, leaving much of the audience puzzled. However, his decision to dive into deep cuts thrilled dedicated Dylan fans, even as it surprised those who expected him to revisit tracks from his portrayal of Dylan in A Complete Unknown. That, as it turned out, was not part of his plan.
During his opening monologue as host, Chalamet hinted at the unexpected nature of his setlist. “You might not recognize the Bob Dylan songs I’m performing tonight, but they’re my personal favorites,” he told the crowd. “I’m so thankful ‘Saturday Night Live’ still embraces weird stuff like this 50 years on. Either they’re incredibly kind for letting me do this or this is some elaborate prank at my expense.”
