Manchester City and Newcastle United, currently fifth and sixth in the Premier League respectively, clash in a crucial top-four battle at the Etihad Stadium. Their previous encounter this season resulted in a 1-1 draw at St James' Park.
Match Preview:
Man City enter this match after a disappointing Champions League defeat at home to Real Madrid (3-2), where they conceded a late goal despite leading. This loss highlights a concerning trend of late-game collapses for Guardiola's side, having lost five games this season from a leading position. Their recent league form has also been patchy, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Arsenal, leaving them 18 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
Despite their recent struggles, Man City boast an impressive record against Newcastle at the Etihad. They are unbeaten in their last 34 Premier League meetings at home against the Magpies (W27 D6) and have won their last 15 home games against them. Newcastle's last away win against Man City in the Premier League was in September 2000. Since then, they have endured a 20-game winless streak at the Etihad (D2 L18) and haven't scored in their last five visits.
However, Newcastle arrive in Manchester with strong away form, having won their last four Premier League away games, including victories against top teams like Man United, Tottenham, and Arsenal. They also recently reached the EFL Cup final and are aiming to end their 70-year trophy drought. Their next three league fixtures against Man City, Nottingham Forest, and Liverpool will be a significant test of their top-four credentials.
Team Form:
* Manchester City (Premier League): WWDWWL
* Manchester City (All Competitions): LWWLWL
* Newcastle United (Premier League): WWWLL
* Newcastle United (All Competitions): WLWLWW
Team News:
Man City will be without Manuel Akanji (adductor injury) for 8-10 weeks. Jack Grealish (muscle issue) is a doubt, along with Nico Gonzalez (knock) and Oscar Bobb (fitness). Akanji's absence could see Rico Lewis or Matheus Nunes at right-back, while Nathan Ake may return to the starting lineup. Guardiola has several midfield options to consider, including Gonzalez (if fit), Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva. Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Omar Marmoush, and Phil Foden are all vying for starting positions on the wings.
Newcastle will be missing Harvey Barnes (muscle), Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Sven Botman (all knee). There is positive news regarding Anthony Gordon (thigh) and Dan Burn (groin), who may return. Nick Pope could return in goal, or Martin Dubravka could retain his place. Fabian Schar, Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali, Jacob Murphy, and Alexander Isak are all expected to return to the starting lineup.
Possible Starting Lineups:
* Manchester City: Ortega; Nunes, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol; Gonzalez, Kovacic; Savinho, Foden, Marmoush; Haaland
* Newcastle United: Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Willock; Murphy, Isak, Gordon
Prediction:
Manchester City 2-2 Newcastle United
Despite Newcastle's poor record at the Etihad, they have a good opportunity to take points against a vulnerable Man City side. While both teams are likely to score, a draw seems the most probable outcome.
